Wondering what to see in Prague on a budget?

Travelling on a budget? Then look no further! Prague really has it all, from affordable restaurants with excellent Czech traditional food to wonderful sites that don’t make your wallet feel lighter. If you have met a Czech person before, you would know that Vyhazovat peníze z okna (Throw money out the window) is not easily done, unless it’s for the pub.

I don’t know about you, but when traveling, I like to walk. There is no better way to explore a city than to track down the beaten streets, finding the connections through the city like a spider web. Prague is fantastic for walkers; the city is divided into sections each district with a number starts with number 1 then it creates a loop around the city. In Prague you can reach any point by walk that treats your eyes, though the public transport is spot on and accurate to the very seconds.

The best tour for walkers and those on a budget is Sandermans New Prague – free walking tour. It’s a 3-hour tour that starts in the center of Old town Square and takes you through all the must-see in the city center of Prague- Astronomical Clock Tower, a view of the Prague Castle, the old Jewish Quarter, to name a few. You would not need to purchase tickets but show up at the meeting spot, and tip- should you wish to.

Malá Strana

If you find yourself near the beautiful theatre Rudofinum, which in fact is one of the free tour destinations, nip over the bridge to the other side called Mala Strana. Mala Strana or ‘Little Quarter’ is a beautiful little place, which if you to the right side after the Mánesův bridge, it will essentially lead you to Prague castle. If go to the ‘somewhat’ left side, it will lead you to Charles Bridge. I say ‘somewhat’ because if you turn sharp left after you cross the Mánesův bridge, there is a small park which holds one of the best views in Prague; a close-up of Charles Bridge.

Lennon Wall

Lennon Wall in Prague

Journeying on, past the Charles Bridge, you can find the famous Lennon Wall, which is an all favorite of Prague attractions. John Lennon who was loved by many, became a symbol for peace and freedom to many Czechs after his assassination in 1980. Many were still struggling under the iron fist of Soviet Rule saw Lennon as an embodiment of the freedom he sang about, and young artists started the ‘Lennon Wall’ site as an anonymous and yet powerful expression of what they wanted for their country.

Divoká Šárka

There is no denying that if you would like to travel to Prague, you’re up for a city break. That being said, to have the full experience of ‘Czech experience’ you should visit Divoká Šárka also translated as ‘wild Šárka’, a female warrior who, according to legend, threw herself from its cliffs as penance for betraying her beloved Citrad in the ‘Maiden’s War’. Despite its tragic tale, this natural reserve is a perfect little escape from the city life. In the summer months both tourists and locals are frequently seen sunbathing by the banks and even bathing in the lake.

Vyšehrad Prague Castle

If you would like to see a castle ‘off the beaten track’ then Vyšehrad is the right place for you. Vyšehrad or ‘Upper Castle’ is located on a hill, on the East bank of Vltava river. Coincidentally, quite close to our hostel. The local legend has it, that Princess Libuše came out on the hill where the castle is now and said, “I see a great city whose glory will touch the stars.” and attained the Přemyslid dynasty. The castle of Vyšehrad gives a lovely view of the river. The districts on the other side and Prague Castle in the distance. The area also has a cemetery which is the resting place of many notable Czech artists. Composers such as Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana who is considered the father of Czech music.  Around the castle you can find many find restaurants on a budget, that offer delicious yet affordable meal.

Havlíčkovy sady

For the wine and outdoors lovers, Havlickovy Sady, or Havlicek Gardens are a special place to spend the time. At the front of the gardens (or the back, depending on which way you enter) there is an unusual rock formation. This morphs into a royal garden area with a fountain. In the center of the park, you can find the vineyard accompanied by the little café and then a bigger open area restaurant. The park is found quite close to our hostel, and it’s another must-do for a budget getaway. Take a picnic, buy the wine, and spend a lovely afternoon relaxing and enjoying the park and all it has to offer.

Have an enjoyable stay with us while exploring the beauties of magical Prague!
