7 Reasons to visit Prague Castle Vysehrad

Walk to Prague Castle Vysehrad

Older than the history of Prague, this stunning castle sits at the edge of a cliff overlooking the Vltava river, the longest river within the Czech Republic. You’ve seen it on many “What to do in Prague” lists, but exactly what makes this castle so magical? There are probably a million reasons to visit Prague Castle Vysehrad, but we had to choose 7 of our favorite reasons to visit this magical place. Continue reading to find out what makes this place a must see in Prague for locals and tourists alike.

Enjoy an Iconic View of Prague – minus the crowds

Vysehrad literally translates to “upper castle”. It was built on top of a hill and from there, legend has it, Prague was first envisioned by a princess. The views are spectacular.

Strolling across the medieval ramparts of Vyšehrad, you’ll have the most stunning and unique views of Prague Castle, Vltava River, and the magnificent famous bridges of Prague. For the best view, go late afternoon just before sunset.

Walk through the Gorgeous Vysehrad Castle Gardens

You will be amazed at the beauty surrounding you. Tucked away in these magnificent walls lies a stunning garden, mostly enjoyed by locals for strolls and picnics. You will have this little slice of heaven to yourself, a rare commodity in Prague.

That being said, it is becoming more and more popular, so make sure to visit soon.

Visit the famous Vysehrad Cemetery Slavín

Vysehrad cemetery is listed together with the famous Jewish Cemetry and Olšany Cemetery as a must-see in Prague. It is the final resting place of famous Czechs, such as artist Alphonse Mucha, and writers like Jan Neruda and Karel Čapek to name a few.

To have a truly unique experience, find the Slavin Tomb, whilst listening to music by Jaroslav Kocian, who is buried there.

Enter the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul

With a history nearing a Millenium, the famous Prague church was elevated to Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 2003. After a devastating fire in the year 1249, the church was rebuilt and today is a mix of Romanesque, Gothics, Neo-Gothic, Baroque architectures and designs.

The interior decor is a homage to history. The history of art, Christianity and the Czech lands line the walls and roof. Making this Basilica a must-see for history lovers.

See the original statues of Charles Bridge – Underground the Vysehrad Castle

The Charles Bridge is a highlight of Prague, however not many know that the original statues have been removed and are now safely housed inside the underground passages of Vysehrad. This is definitely one of the main 7 reasons to visit the Prague Castle Vysehrad.

For those interested in the true history and marvels of Prague, this is a wonderful discovery.

Find the rare Romanesque Rotunda of St. Martin

Vysehrad is home to some of Prague’s most hidden and unknown architectural treasures. Walking along one of the cobblestone paths, you’ll eventually find the largest and oldest preserved rotunda in Prague. Built in the second half of the 11th century, the Rotunda of St. Martin has managed to escape destruction several times in its long history.

A cannonball embedded to the right of the front window is a reminder of the Battle of Prague in 1757. Today, it is mainly used for religious purposes and will only be found open on such occasions.

Stroll through the Castle vineyards and go for a wine tasting

It seems an unlikely place to find vineyards, but the slopes have proven to be an ideal location for grapes. In fact, these vineyards have been on the grounds since the 11th century. It is unlikely that you will be able to taste wine from these vineyards, however, a few winemakers have set up shop at the bottom of these famous slopes and offer a unique Czech wine tasting experience for connoisseurs.
